About Us
Chettle is a small village in North Dorset with regenerative ideologies that puts community, nature & resilience before profit. Home to The Chettle Lodge, Stable Loft & Chettle Village Store. The village of Chettle is a special place; it is small but with an extremely strong sense of community, full of young families who live and work locally. The owner, Alice Favre, is a keen environmentalist who would like to create an abundant landscape that is fit for the environmental and social challenges that are increasingly facing us.
Chettle is a remarkable place. It is the very essence of an English rural idyll, with lovingly maintained thatched cottages, the obligatory manor house and church, and a population of only about 100. Chettle has avoided the sad fate of many small villages, where outsiders buy up the houses as second homes, thereby driving up property prices and leaving the village empty except on weekends, and where the village shop closes and the young local people can’t afford to live in the area. Chettle doesn’t have that problem because outsiders can’t buy houses here. 32 houses are still owned by the Chettle Estate and are rented out to people who live and work in the village, at well below market value. As a result the village has a distinctly old world flavour, people walk down the middle of the road, everyone knows everyone and residents support the village shop - there is a tremendous sense of community. The village’s history (pre-WWII) is the subject of a book entitled The Enduring Village, published in 2008.
In the centre of the village is a playground that reflects Chettle’s identity. Much of the equipment is upcycled and quirky – half a round hay feeder turned on its side and painted red, an old boat, two trampolines, and a tractor made from tree trunks. The playground is maintained by village residents so new things are always being added, according to the under ten’s living within driving distance, it's their favourite playpark!
